Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am an elementary school teacher. I have been teaching for 9 years and currently teach third grade.

I share a classroom with another teacher and the past two years we have worked extremely hard in creating not only an academically rigorous environment, but a place that our students would consider their second home. For this reason during the holiday season, we decorate our classroom, with an artificial tree, a menorah, and a kinara. We try to also teach our students about different cultures, and foster tolerance. Unfortunately, our tree is really old and the branches have slowly broken off, and we only have posters of a menorah, and a kinara. Even though the tree is decorated with my old Christmas ornaments, and some of the lights do not work it is amazing to see the students' faces light up, when they walk in to our decorated classroom. We always hear one or two students whisper that they do not have a Christmas tree or presents at home. I feel that as teachers we need to provide students with rich experiences like these.

With the fulfillment of this proposal I would be able to display a six foot artificial pre-lit Christmas tree, along with an electrical menorah, and Kinara (for the celebration of Kwanzaa). This will allow my class to have a memorable experience of walking into the classroom, seeing all of these beautiful decorations, and knowing that their teachers took the time to create this for all of them. I will also take the opportunity to create lessons that will introduce students to different cultures.

I must mention that before I decided to write this proposal, I thought that no one would see the importance in my project because there are so many other things that I could ask for, that are essential to instruction. But I strongly, believe that sometimes we need to think outside of the box and provide students with experiences that will enrich their lives, which will inspire them to move forward.
