My Students

The students I teach are from a diverse background and are building a passion for what we do in literacy. They are fun, witty, and I love greeting them everyday at the door. Unfortunately, we don't always have books that interest them or that reach them. We don't get enough funding for new books for a full class, and we often have to go without or use old materials, which affects the students desire to learn, and I hate to see that. They feel that materials we have don't speak to them or don't apply to them because they are old or falling apart, and it turns them off of reading.

I want to support them and give them what we need by making reading special to them.

My Project

When looking across many materials for readers of differing abilities, but remaining age appropriate, it is hard to find something that keeps my students' interests. I know many of my students love to read magazines, and Scholastic, alongside the New York Times, in the Upfront magazine have made material relevant, curricular, and factual for students written in a way that they will be able to grasp. In using this magazine in the classroom as a tool for teaching nonfiction literacy, I hope to make more frequent readers out of my students, and keep them abreast of what is happening in the world.

I would love to see my students become more active readers.

I teach students of many different backgrounds, from ESL, to different socioeconomic backgrounds, to cultural differences. One thing they all tell me though, is that they don't read by the time they get to high school. I want to effect a change by giving them materials that will speak to them.
