My students need 35 dry erase boards to check student understanding in class and 1 camcorder for my students to create skits, mini-documentaries, and "news programs" about events we study.
I teach 10th grade DC History and 11th grade US History in a public charter high school in Washington, DC. 100% of the students are African American and 95% of my students come from Wards 7 and 8, one of the areas most plagued by crime and poverty in the District. The resources available to the students in surrounding areas are not afforded to my students--resources that many of us take for granted.
I'd love to be able to make class more kinesthetic for my students. My students are very hands-on learners who enjoy visual and audio aids and presenting in front of the class. I'd love to get them out of their seats and recreating history. One activity they really enjoy is having to create a "newscast" of an event in history or "interview" an important person in history. They have to be very knowledgeable about the event in order to be the interviewer or the interviewee, and they have fun in the process.
This year, I'd love for my students to be able to record their performances with a camcorder so we can create an entire newscast or interview series for a unit we are studying. They will not only have to read up on the event they are responsible for, but pull in primary sources, understand how the event impacted Americans or Washingtonians (depending on the class), and be creative along the way. Another thing we are lacking is a way to check students' understanding of key ideas or concepts in class. Instead of having an exit slip at the end of class, I'd love to check for understanding using white boards. I can easily assess who understands the material and who does not. This is where you come in! My school does not have the money to get these resources.
Your donation will drastically impact my students' understanding of history. They will learn that history is a lot more than dead people and dates and that history is complex but can also be very engaging!
