My Students

What's the first thing you do when you decide to read? More than likely, you choose your favorite book and decide on a cozy place to kick back and relax. Imagine not having a comfortable place to relax. My students are facing that very problem!

My students are 30 very energetic and excited 5 and 6 year old kindergartners.

They attend a public school in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. We are an ethnically diverse group, thrilled to begin our journey into kindergarten and the wonderful world of reading!

My Project

I know when I begin reading, I always look for a place to get comfortable. Aside from our classroom rug, the only other places my students have to relax are wooden chairs and a plastic couch. The rocking chairs and comfy couch would provide at least 4 students at a time a cozy place to read. When your comfortable, everything else disappears and you can fully enjoy your story. I want my students to have this experience. The rocking chairs and couch can be one more factor helping to make my students fall in love with reading!

One of my personal goals as a kindergarten teacher is to pass on my love of reading to my students.

Building a great foundation for reading in kindergarten can lead to a life of success and happiness. This love for reading can begin with something as simple as a rocking chair and couch. In the words of Jacqueline Kennedy, "there are many little ways to enlarge your child's world. Love of books is the best of all."
