Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My classroom is called an Explicit Social Emotional Learning (EXSEL) classroom. This EXSEL classroom focuses on using specifically taught social skills in a highly structured, safe, and positive environment. The purpose is to help students so they can be successful at using social skills and coping tools to increase self-regulation, build positive self-esteem, and build and maintain healthy relationships.

My students are incredibly thoughtful, creative, and passionate about what they care about!

They want to feel safe, loved, and build genuine relationships with others. These kids work hard and play hard. They get as excited about math groups as they do about art projects. They often come to me with ideas about tools we can use in groups, art projects, or social skills activities. I honor their ideas whenever possible because I love that they want to be involved in creating their own learning environment. This is truly a unique and fun class and I am thankful that I am able to be their teacher!

My Project

Having a cozy and organized writing center with a variety of materials and activities will go a long way in helping my students form a positive relationship with writing! Materials such as differentiated writing center activities and growth mindset journals will make writing less daunting and more meaningful for my students.

A comfy reading corner will give my students a relaxing environment so they can learn the true joy of reading for pleasure!

Right now, my students don't have a designated comfy spot where they can just relax and read for fun. They also need more access to books that cover social-emotional situations that are relevant to them and help them learn coping skills and effective social interactions.

Having a reading corner and a writing center will help demonstrate to my students that the subjects of reading and writing don't have to be tied to a desk and that these are relaxing and engaging skills and activities that they can take with them wherever they go!
