Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My classroom is full of eager 2nd graders who generally start the year off lacking confidence in their reading abilities. As the year progresses, they learn more about literary genres and are able to identify the elements of each type of writing.
My students are mainly English language learners.
We are a Title 1 school in a neighborhood of low-income, hard-working families who are very supportive of our school and its goals. Each student is excited about using different resources in their daily learning.
My Project
Education has taken yet another turn. Our state has adopted the Common Core curriculum in order to prepare the students for college. That preparation starts in the primary grades. Our long term focus is to get each student college-ready and they are aware of that.
The curriculum in the primary grades is to utilize 50% fictional text and 50% informational text. My students come to me at the beginning of the year with plenty of exposure to fictional writing. They need more experience with informational text. Scholastic News is a fun and easy way for students to read and analyze informational writing.
I would like each student to receive his own subscription to this educational magazine so we can use it in the classroom and for homework.
