This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our classroom library books are literally flying off the shelves. My students love to read but I don't have enough books for them in our classroom library.
I have a very bright group of second and third graders who are avid readers.
They literally cheer when independent reading time comes around.
I teach in an inner city school in a big city for a district that is facing a severe budget crisis. We don't have a school librarian, let alone money to buy classroom library sets. Most of my students have never been to our local public library and do not have the means to purchase books to read at home.
I just recently moved from teaching Kinder through second grade to teaching primarily third graders for the first time in my career. The books I had acquired over so many years do not meet the levels or interests of my current students.
The bottom line is that my amazing students need books in their hands.
My Project
Can you imagine being fortunate enough to have a classroom full of students that love to read? If you walk into my classroom on any given day, you would see my students sitting at their desks, sitting on the rug, laying on the rug and even sitting outside during recess, READING. They discuss books with each other, recommend, loan and borrow books from each other and look forward to "shopping" for books in our sparse classroom library.
My students need over 50 different books that match their reading levels and interests that they can read in class and can borrow to take home. They need books like Poppleton, Stone Fox and the Whipping Boy. They also need book boxes for storage, markers and name tags. These books and materials will continue to foster their love of reading.
Your donations will help get books into the hands and minds of my students.
My students will have access to books that match their independent reading levels and interests. They will grow as readers and as individuals. They will continue to love to read. That is just priceless.
