Getting Books in Kids' Hands to Inspire Reading

Help me give my students a classroom set of the classic graphic novel Watchmen for our AP Literature class.

My Project

One of my goals in the Advanced Placement Literature classroom to expand students' understanding of what Literature can be and where it can take us. My hope here is to introduce my students to the graphic novel Watchmen, a dystopian take on superheroes that represents a masterclass blending of postmodern literature and art. "Watchmen, the groundbreaking series from award-winning author Alan Moore, presents a world where the mere presence of American superheroes changed history," according to the Amazon description. "Considered the greatest graphic novel in the history of the medium, the Hugo Award-winning story chronicles the fall from grace of a group of superheroes plagued by all-too-human failings."

Graphic novels mix the mediums of text and art, and a proper analysis Watchmen really benefits from students being able to study a printed copy of the text as the artists behind the work intended it to be read.

Printed copies of a book can be a luxury for many families these days. I teach in a school where many families rely on the school to feed their students breakfast and lunch just to get by. My students tell me about how their parents work multiple jobs to make ends meet and how they take care of their siblings and homes together to alleviate some of the burdens of their parents. It's hard to also ask them to then buy a book. So I rely on the limited textbooks of our school (classics, mostly, from centuries past) or free pdf versions I scrounge up from around the web. But a graphic novel, especially one as in-depth and well-crafted as Watchmen, really needs a physical copy for students to properly read and analyze, to track themes and symbols and the way words and images can be combined to make something new and special.
