This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Art can turn a dull classroom into a place where children want to come, knowing they will have fun. Please help me turn my classroom into a place where art and humanities curricula are integrated to keep my students excited and engaged in their learning.
My transitional kindergarten students are just turning 5.
Our classroom is culturally, economically and linguistically diverse. Some of the students have special learning needs, and some are learning English for the first time. Our high-poverty, Title I school is located in the San Fernando Valley.
They learn best when they are actively engaged in hands-on experiences. We will read age-appropriate literature with multicultural themes, and use art, music and drama activities to deepen comprehension and make connections to the stories being read. Through these hands-on art activities, the students will be able to make predictions, compare and contrast characters, settings and plotlines, and develop vocabulary. Literature with multicultural themes will also provide opportunities for exposure to many world languages, as well as world history.
My Project
We will use the subscriptions to BrainPop Jr. and Scholastic's Clifford magazine to research themes such as world culture and history. When we read a story such as "Bee-Bim-Bop," we will be able to learn about Korean cultural traditions and language. When we read "Just Like Abraham Lincoln," we will be able to watch a video or read a magazine article about the real Abraham Lincoln. A carpet will make the perfect area to assemble for these activities.
We will incorporate music and visual art using the paintbrushes and multi-cultural children's CD. These items will also be used to make scenery and paper costumes as we act out the stories together. Posters and bulletin boards will be made so that we can see what foreign languages look like when written. The children will be able to express what they have learned through their paintings and by making colorful illustrations to go along with their writing pieces.
By "Empowering Students Through Art," your generosity will make an important difference in their lives.
The types of hands-on activities we will be able to do with the resources in this request will ignite their desire to participate and learn more. They will become more literate, better writers, and learn more about history and the world's many cultures. Thank you for your support!
