Help me give my students the ability to charge their Chrome books in the Tech Tub so they can participate fully in the technology portions of the science lessons. Our school does not have enough charging carts.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My 6th grade future scientists love using hands-on technology to watch educational videos, participate in virtual labs, and interactive lessons in addition to our science curriculum. Many of my students are immigrants whose first language is not English. Our students are taught in a Title I School in a large city where technology resources are scarce. One hundred percent of the students receive free or reduced lunch meals and are taught in over-crowded classrooms.
Despite the challenges and cultural and language barriers, the students are eager to learn.
I love that my diverse students become more engaged when they are utilizing and learning from technology. Using technology provides for an inclusive learning environment. I would like technology to be a component of my students' science learning experience as I know it will provide them with 21st century skills and "evens out" the technology playing field.
My Project
As in many inner-city Title I schools, my school lacks charging carts for student Chrome Books. My school is 98 years old and the classrooms lack electrical outlets. Many of my students are unable to charge their laptops at home and therefore school is the only place where they can do this. Having charged laptops will ensure that my students will not miss any portions of the science lessons including virtual science labs, simulations, and interactive activities. This technology also assists in communicating with English Language Learners and their families.
