We are a community of learners with many strengths and needs. Many of us are reading and problem solving below grade level and many live in homes where the family spends most of the income on rent in order to live in a good school district.
My students are solution-oriented kids who strive to succeed, and they come up with creative solutions to societal issues.
When I mentioned the new recess law, they got all excited. Then, they started figuring out what would make the extra time more fun! They are resourceful and are working on building good habits as we spend time in class discussing nutrition and hydration.
My Project
Getting outside and running and playing together is what childhood should be about. Each week we get out and take our turn with the equipment for a big kick ball game. The whole class gets out on the field and runs and cheers and learns how to win with grace and lose with good sportsmanship. You know, the important lessons we should teach at school. When we came back in last week one of the kids commented that it'd be cool if we had more equipment to play with the other days of the week. That's when a full blown discussion of what they'd love to have broke out!
Ten year olds need to be outside with the sun on their skin and running around moving their bodies.
This project will help me help them do that.
By supporting this project you will be putting balls, bases, jump ropes, cones, and so much more into the hands of my students. They'll have a chance to see their ideas take form before their eyes and learn that even strangers support them getting up and moving around to become healthier.
