This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

A typical day in my classroom is anything but typical. This year, we have taken a strengths-based approach to learning, and my students have discovered different talents within themselves. As a group, we are beginning to appreciate others for their strengths, and find new ways to showcase our own.

My scholars are 32 energetic sixth grade GATE students.

They are a group that has been together since second grade, and are about to embark on a new journey into middle school. They are a passionate, kind, and resilient bunch that perseveres even through difficult situations. They are eager to learn, and have recently found their own voice in an effort to speak up against social injustices. This year, they have strengthened their technological abilities, and are learning to integrate new components of media into presentations and projects. My school has started an arts program that teaches students dance, signing, art, computer programming, and various musical instruments both throughout the day and after school. While the students are excited to learn, they are held back due to the fact that they don't have the necessary tools to take their progress to the next level.

My Project

This presentation stand will assist my students by allowing them to have an opportunity to lead their peers in collaborative learning. They will be able to present their Common Core units from anywhere in the room, allowing them to engage the audience and move freely as they present their materials. Additionally, students will be able to become junior teachers and lead their peers in new academic endeavors. They will be able to take over the presentation of a learning skill as a way to demonstrate mastery of their learning and offer explanations and visuals that support claims. I am proposing to use this work stand to allow students the opportunity to take ownership of their learning, and share their perspective with their class, as they lead each other through different Common Core units. This furniture piece has the ability to change our classroom environment to allow for more creativity production, presentations, and chances to communicate about academics.

Using this work stand, my students will be able to demonstrate skills in a scholarly manner.

They will work in expert groups with their peers, without having to be cramped for space. They will be able to move freely around the room as they lead the class in their academic presentations, in order to keep focus. They will be able to physically relocate in the room in order to work more efficiently engage others. This stand will change their learning experience and develop presentation skills.
