Get up and Glow with 9 Square in the Air

Help me give my students a 9 Square in the Air game. PVC pipes will be used to create the 9 square grid. Black lights will be used to enhance the game to a glow-in-the dark experience.

My Project

My name is Kristy Cobbs and I teach middle school Health and Physical Education in Scottsburg, Indiana.

I want to bring a new, exciting and fun activity to my middle school students.

This activity is called 9-Square in the Air. The game itself is similar to 4-Square but it’s played overhead using a 9-square PVC framed court and a variety of different sized balls. To play, each player defends their square by returning the ball over the bar to another players’ square. Players may pass, set or hit the ball with one or two hands. This is a fast-paced game where students work together to get the leader out. The game can be adapted into many variations including reinforcing volleyball skills or building core strength by playing while sitting on yoga balls. Students playing while on yoga balls can also level the playing field for the disabled students which is sometimes hard to do at the middle school level.

Building teamwork skills, communication and strategizing are just some of the skills students will develop while playing 9-square in the Air. This game of meets 4 out of 5 main Indiana State Standards for Physical Education.

Finally, I want to advance this activity to a whole new level by turning off the light and using black light to make the game glow in the dark. Middle school students can be difficult to motivate in the Physical Education setting. This activity will generate great excitement and I know my student will love it especially with all the black lights.
