My Students
I'm a Physical Education teacher and STEM advocate at a Title I elementary school in NYC, with 77% of our students receiving free or reduced fee lunch, and over 5% currently living in the NYC shelter system.
My students face many challenges but come to school with lots of energy, energy we need to help them direct into healthy physical activity.
My students need to obtain the skills and understanding they deserve to live a healthy life style. While providing them with a much needed opportunity to get the exercise needed to focus their minds in the classroom.
Research shows that active kids learn better. They perform better on tests, get better grades, attend school more often, and behave better in class.
My Project
What do you do when your schools STEM budget limitations give you a milk crate of 10 year old lemon laptops? You fire up the LINUX juicer and make some lemonade for your Physical Education (PE) dance party.
We'er going to get the STEM dance party started.
At this point you may be asking how is this STEM? "It's a Physical Education class." Well, in 2018 STEM is every teachers job. The dance pads are part of a collaboration between my self (in PE) and our Technology teacher. Our students will design and program dance routines for the game in Technology and will step it up and dance in PE.
The best part is we are doing this at an unbelievably low price. Thanks to some old laptops, light weight free LINUX, a completely free open source arcade style dance program called Step Mania, and a little help from donors like you to obtain some high quality dance pads.
