I'm a physical education teacher at a Title 1 elementary school in NYC, with 77% of our students receiving free or reduced fee lunch.
Many of our students face large challenges but come to school with lots of energy, energy we need to help them direct into healthy physical activity.
I want to give them the skills and understanding they deserve to live a healthy life style, while giving them an outlet to get the exercise needed to focus their minds in the classroom.
Active kids learn better. They perform better on tests, get better grades, attend school more often, and behave better in class.
My Project
While in a meeting with a colleague, I was surprised to discover five 2000's era Dell PC's running windows XP. After a brief discussion on what she is using the computers for and what she would like to use them for, we migrated all 3 to much nicer, safer, modern, and faster Lubuntu Linux. But our job is not done.
Now we need your help to bring modern computers to the class room.
Linux is free, as in freedom. There are literally thousands of high quality educational games, tools, and resources available for absolutely free. The only catch is you have to have hardware that is powerful enough to run the software.
The Raspberry pi 3 is an affordable computer designed for use in the educational environment. If this project is funded, we will expand the free software that we can use to support learning in the classroom with programs like sonic-pi, Gimp, libre office, Gcompris, TuxMath, and Scratch. Most importantly, with modern hardware we can use the internet.
