Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Let's get that Discussion Going!! All we need is some great literature books to talk about!! Monarch Academy is a public charter school located in East Oakland and the student population is 100% African American and Latino/a. Teachers at this school are not bound by any adopted/scripted curriculum and are afforded the opportunity and freedom to be creative with their teaching as long as it is standards based instruction. Essentially, we develop our own curriculum. The guidelines we use are rigorous and academically challenging. I teach 4th and 5th grade multiage and my students absolutely love literature discussions. Students are in heterogeneous groups and meet twice weekly to keep the discussion going! They are practicing all of their reading strategies and they push each others thinking as they ask deep questions (Why? How? Infer?) that require responses based on text evidence. For each literature group, there are roles for every group member that students must prepare for such as . . . Discussion Director, Literary Luminary and Vocabulary Virtuoso. Our literature selection is sorely lacking and it would be such an amazing gift to expose my students to some of the fantastic texts that exist. This proposal is asking for literature books sets so that my students can engage in more meaningful literature discussion with books that will both challenge them as readers and engage them to new heights. In advance, thank you for keeping the discussion going!!
