This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Students at my school are much like other high school students. They are embarking on a journey of self-discovery and defining their self-identity. I believe music has a large role to play in defining that culture for them, and so I believe it is my role as a music teacher to cultivate a better understanding of the art form that they so readily consume and draw social lines and boundaries with.

Music in Chicago, like many other urban areas, is an art form that defines cultures, down to the neighborhoods.

Whether it is traditional regional music of culture, the pulsing beats of electronic house music, the intense fire and passion of jazz music, or the emergent violence of drill music, students are consuming music on a daily basis with greater availability than ever before.

I see my role as providing them opportunities to create new music and music that reflects a variety of influences, taking positives from different musics and acknowledging negatives. Allowing students more opportunities and instruments is the essential key to the opportunity being created.

My Project

Currently, I have been working on building a great inventory of instruments for the modern band ensemble. All to most of this work has been thanks to the support of donors! I have been able to acquire electric basses, ukuleles, drum sticks, and many other supplies, all thanks to the support of DonorsChoose.

Giving my students another drum set will be an invaluable addition to our classroom!

We currently have one drum set that was donated by another faculty member and by adding another drum set we can work towards having resources that all belong to our classroom and our space.
