My Students
The photography classroom is one of the places in our school where students can feel great about themselves.
Our public school, in Brooklyn, NY was created specifically to work with students who have been held back TWICE before entering 9th grade.
These are the young people who have been the most overlooked and underserved in the city. They need a place where they can be at the center of the community, rather than feeling like the kids who were left behind. They're smart, passionate teens, who have big struggles with reading, writing and math, and our dedicated team works hard to help them grow in these areas. In the photography and art classroom they can show their brilliance and creativity, and their successes are immediate and visible.
My Project
Last year I taught the first ever photography classes in the school. Students got deeply involved in photographing their worlds and developing their visions. This year our school is expanding and I will be teaching 3 sections of Photography II, a more advanced class for students who have already mastered the basics of digital photography. The 8 small inexpensive cameras we used last year are not enough. These 6 additional cameras will give my students more hands-on time with the cameras and will allow them to develop their creativity and skills on more high quality equipment. Included is one DSLR camera, so students can learn to use a camera similar to the ones used by professionals. The simple cases will keep the cameras protected and the memory cards are necessary to record each photo taken.
With these donations it will become possible for me to teach classes where every student has a camera in his or her hands.
Students will continue to gain confidence in their visions and will build real-world skills.
