Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Walt Disney referred to the minds of our children as the greatest national resource this country has. The challenge my students face every day is that many of them lack the fluency to express, in writing, what they have on their minds. My challenge is to help them develop the skills to do just that!
Statistically, my students are the under-represented.
They come from immigrant families, single-parent families, poverty stricken households, yet they persevere. They are inner-city school children who try to make the best of the bad situations they have been handed. Some of them have children of their own and, at times, may feel the cycle of poverty will never be broken, yet they persevere. Bearing witness to their perseverance has challenged and inspired me. For this reason, I wish I could provide them with the tools they need to continue to be successful during these their high school years and beyond.
My Project
I work at an inner city school where funds are limited. At the same time, we are being given the task of preparing our students for the new Common Core Standards and Writing Across the Curriculum. My challenge is that the majority of the children attending this school are far from being prepared for the new testing standards that will be implemented soon. Adding to this challenge is the fact that most of my student population consists of English Learners. In an effort to help them not only prepare for the new type of testing, but to just be better communicators in our global society, I need the tools to help take what they already know to the next level of development. For this reason, I am requesting writing materials, graphic organizers, and books to help me to better connect with English learners. I, like Mr. Disney, believe that the minds of our children are our greatest resource, and with your kindness, my students will become better writers during the course of the school year.
I encourage my students to be aware of the world around them and view themselves as a vital part of a global society.
I feel that, in order to be a more effective citizen, one has to develop effective communication skills. Your gift will help me guide my students to develop their writing skills so they can succeed in high school, college, and beyond.
