Help me give my students a variety of accessible, leisure-time opportunities providing social experiences, exploration, and choice-making of multi-sensory activities such as building a Magnetic Marble Run and playing tactile table games like Tic-Tac-Toe with same-aged, non-disabled peers.
I am a teacher of students who are blind and partially seeing, many of whom have additional disabilities. I teach students in a multi-age special education classroom. My students do not have opportunities to play games with peers when they are in their general education classrooms because the games are inaccessible to those who either cannot see or cannot see well; thus, my students miss out on valuable social learning opportunities making friendships more difficult to form.
Almost all social skills used by sighted children and adults have been learned by visually observing the environment and other persons, and conducting themselves in socially appropriate ways based on those observations.
Students with visual impairments must be taught when and how to smile, frown, nod, wink, shrug, and many other nonverbal communication skills.
Playing games is a lifelong leisure time activity that fosters social interactions. In order to be accessible to a student with a visual impairment, most commercially available games must be adapted by adding Braille and tactile markings. For instance, Hi-Ho! Cheery-O! and Bananagrams can be adapted in little time. There are some commercially available games that have already been adapted with braille as well as large print such as Uno. Other games that are accessible right out of the box are: Snappy Dinosaur Dentist, Bop It, and Hot Potato.
“Get Ready, Get Set, Let’s Play” will use games to foster inclusion and the acquisition of social skills, which must be taught to those who are blind or partially seeing. Students with visual impairments will first learn to play games with their peers in the special education classroom, While receiving instruction in appropriate social skills. Once students have learned to play these games and have improved their socialization skills, games will be used solely in students’ general education classrooms.
