I have the privilege of being able to share my love of reading to students in grades 6-8 at the middle school where I work. Previously, I taught the same students at the elementary school that feeds into the middle school where I am now. It has been amazing to watch the students learn and grow throughout the years, and see first hand their transition from elementary to middle school. We are a Title I school, which means that the majority of the students who attend are on free and reduced-price lunch. Many do not have access to books, technology or anything educational outside of school.
To be honest, some of the kids who attend my school have been dealt a difficult hand in life.
No matter the adversity they face on a daily basis, the students still come to school each day with smiles on their faces, a great attitude and ready to learn. They are all truly incredibly smart and wonderful kids who deserve everything good in this world.
My Project
Every year, 12 students from my school devote a huge chunk of their time reading a specific set of books that have been selected for the Middle School Battle of the Books list. After reading these books, the students then participate in a county wide competition to see which schools are the most knowledgeable when it comes to the Battle of the Books list. The school who wins the county competition then competes against other schools from our region. The 2020/2021 middle school Battle of the Books list was recently released.
There are eight brand new books on the 2020/2021 book list that are not in our school library.
My students need to have access to these eight book in order to be able to read, and prepare for the competition next school year. These books will give my students a fair chance against the other schools in our county.
