My Students

I teach at an early college charter high school where my students self select to work toward an associate's degree while completing their high school requirements.

Our school focuses on relationships, which I believe has been closing the socio-economic and racial achievement gaps that exist at other schools.

COVID-19 has prevented close contact fitness activities and has forced most activities to our outdoor spaces, regardless of weather. This has resulted in rapid wear on our fitness equipment. Most if it is now in poor condition and needs to be replaced.

My students are driven and academically focused. I want to provide opportunities that allow them to experience all the benefits of moving their bodies and help them develop the joy of recreation. Having equipment that is in good repair is necessary to make this happen.

My Project

Students are craving play and movement. Covid has taken a toll on both. To keep them safe and foster creative play and physical fitness, we have moved most activity outdoors. This has resulted in complete wear on most of our equipment. We have been doctoring with superglue, duct tape and constant trips to the air compressor in between and during classes, but we have reached a breaking point. We need to replace our equipment to keep going. Being outside, where viral load is low, is one of the best ways to continue socializing and giving young people what they need right now.
