Get Outside and Learn: Taking Learning Outdoors!

My students need different types of seating so we can comfortably wiggle while learning and take these chairs to our outdoor classroom and still be able to comfortable and enjoyably read, write and observe.

My Students

I teach in an urban setting. Please support 49 bright young minds learning in a Dual Immersion setting learning to read, write, and communicate intellectually and socially in English and Spanish. 74 % of our student population are language learners and over 50% are considered low-income and receive free or reduced lunch. Being that I teach in an urban setting, many of our students do not spend as much time outdoors and active as would be considered healthy. This is made worse by new ideas that recess is not productive way for children to spend time learning at school.

Given the current ideas about learning and time spent outside I would like to take my class of students outside once a week every week.

In order to maintain this level of health, fitness and outdoor time observing, writing, questioning and exploring we would benefit tremendously from having new materials to support outdoor learning and increased movement to use both indoors and outdoors.

Knowing that fresh air, exercise and movement are important to learning, I am confident that our students will gain new experiences, deepen their confidence in themselves to do things that they have not done before.

My Project

Students and teachers need fresh air in order to be ready to learn. Daily recess provides time outside with friends, but it rarely provides time for students to observe, explore and question with teacher support while outside. We plan to get outside for an entire day every week of this school year. We will explore nearby natural areas, enjoy our outdoor learning space and continue to do our daily learning routines in new areas.

In addition to continued outdoor exercise, fresh air and wellness, we plan to delve into the world of observation, questioning and exploring.

We hope to use modifications such as seats to support comfort and learning both inside the classroom and outdoors. We also hope that having chairs that are not hard might encourage kids that we want them to develop their core muscles, wiggle all while learning. We expect these chairs to make our classroom feel more and more home like.

Students feel motivated by change, comfort and challenge. We anticipate that these chairs will support and deepen learning both inside our classroom as well as outdoors.
