This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school has a large vegetable garden. However we are lacking basic hand tools. Students plant, harvest, and maintain the garden. Every teacher integrates gardening and science. Our students love to garden and will jump at a chance for more gardening opportunities.

Most families choose to transfer their children to our school.

Others live in the neighborhood. Students are from many different cultures and approximately 40% speak English as a second language. A large majority of our students come from lower income families and qualify for free or reduced-priced lunch.

My Project

Just a few shovels and rakes will expand the gardening experience for all the students at our school. Students of all ages are eager and willing to help turn ground at every opportunity -whether for spring planting or clearing weeds! Students also maintain the compost bin in the garden. The shovels and rakes are much needed for this project.

Our school garden is used by every teacher and by all students.

Students are eager participants. Kindergarten through eighth-grade teachers create Science lessons in the garden. Students learn about propagation, reproduction, and soil fertility. All of these topics begin with students tilling the soil! Our school has 160 students and all will benefit!
