Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students live in the highest crime ridden neighborhood in the Bronx, New York. However, that's not who my students are! My students are bright eyed sixth graders who want to learn! They want to get better at reading and writing, and are willing to put in the work!
Although they are sixth graders, on average, my students read at a fourth grade level.
How does this happen? The majority of my students, unfortunately, do not have the financial means to purchase books to read in their homes. Furthermore, they do not have anyone to take them to the library on a consistent basis. Therefore, over the years, they've slowly fallen behind in their reading levels. Despite being behind, they are willing and eager to work hard and get back on their appropriate reading level.
My Project
My students need to read at least 45 minutes per day in order to increase their reading levels. It's hard for anyone, much less sixth graders, to read books that do not spark their interest. I have chosen books that speak to a wide variety of interests from science to mystery!
I want my students to see that reading isn't boring!
I'm particularly excited about the non-fiction books that I'v chosen, as non-fiction reading has been proven to increase reading levels! My goal is for my students to fall in love with reading by introducing them to books that peak the interests.
