My Students

Imagine sitting in class and being able to see and hear the class next door! That's right, by design we have no doors! Though cool and unique, it can also be difficult for students to focus and stay engaged. What if we could create a learning oasis despite our set up? We need your help!

My students represent diversity at its best.

Our school is located in the heart of our city, where we service all students from different backgrounds. Our school has a huge transitional population where many of my students live in transitional housing. The great news is that my students want to learn no matter what reading level they were on when entering my class. There are some obstacles that truly affect reaching every child and his or her individual needs. Our school is designed to promote grade level collaboration, so we do not have doors. This design was also created for smaller class sizes. However, being a public school has allowed our class sizes to go up to 30+ students. I currently have 24 students and it has been challenging to reach every child given our layout and class size.

My Project

I believe that if I create an environment that will promote differentiation in its setup, then regardless of our school layout and class size, students' needs will be met. I would also like to give my students the option to create their own private learning space for classwork and testing. Partitions will promote focus and a sense of privacy. Lastly, I'm asking for books written on different levels for leveled reading groups. A differentiated library of books will engage my struggling, on-level, and above level readers during reading workshop.

These resources will truly help to create a new learning environment for my students.

I can just picture it now, students excited about learning the elements of a story because we are all engaged in various brand new texts. They have books on their level and can meet with me to discuss and review at their level. When given a task, they can have privacy and can focus on their classwork using the partitions. Who needs a door! Please help this become a reality!
