Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a third grade teacher in the South Bronx. I work with a large population of students who are immigrants to the United States, or their parents are. Many of them speak other languages at home.
As a teacher, the subject that presents the most challenges is writing. My students have to create writing portfolios, with writing pieces that show evidence of the writing process. Many times I feel that I am pulling teeth, because it is so difficult to get the children to begin writing.
Unfortunately, in my school we are not provided with any resources for the Writer's Workshop. At best we receive a curriculum map at the beginning of the year and portfolio folders. I am asking for two Take It to Your Seat Writing Centers and a Contractions Writing Center, both from Lakeshore Learning. Because space is limited the materials that I am asking for will allow me to set up two to three baskets of folders. Each folder will contain an activity that will address a writing goal. These activities are set up in a way that students can work independently or in groups. Many times it is a tool that can be used to address needs, like grammar, punctuation, or using descriptive words. The use of these center activities will eventually allow students too address needs that they have, and then allow them to meet the goals that they and I have set for them when completing writing pieces for their portfolios.
I believe that if I provide a writing center it will be a tool that I could use to motivate the children to write. It will be a way that both students who are struggling and the students that need to be challenged can find activities that suit their needs.
With the fulfillment of this proposal, I will hopefully get to launch a great Writer's Workshop. I am asking for two Take It to Your Seat Writing Centers and a Contractions Writing Center (I am asking for a center specifically addressing contractions because I feel that students are introduced to the concept in second grade, but do not quite know how to use them in their writing), both from Lakeshore Learning. I would also need folders and an organizer to keep track of the work that is being completed.
