I need to attend the National Get Your Teach on Conference in Dallas, TX. This 4-day professional development opportunity will help me explore strategies for increasing student engagement, creativity, and collaboration.
My class is full of brilliant 6 year-olds ready to take on the world. They come in with little knowledge, and will come out reading in 2 languages. My first graders are in a Dual Language Spanish/English program.
Approximately 50% of my students come from native Spanish speaking homes, while the other 50% are from native English speaking homes.
Every day, 90% of the instruction is in Spanish. As we strive to learn the target language, we also introduce English into our day. We follow all the standards for the Common Core State Standards, but they learn primarily in Spanish in first grade. About half of my class receives free or reduced-price lunch and could use the extra help in all areas.
My Project
As a full-time teacher, mentor, and leader, I am always looking for opportunities to learn more about teaching and find new ways to improve my craft. I began thinking about the learning experiences I enjoy most - and - what experiences my enthusiastic, active, curious first graders need to stay focused and succeed. I have always found that making learning fun and exciting, helps engage the students and make learning more enjoyable and memorable.
The more the teacher is engaged, the students will be as well.
Some incredible super-teachers are hosting a 4-day professional development conference in June to provide teachers with new strategies for raising student engagement and making learning FUN! Topics at previous conferences include Engaging Readers, STEM, Social Studies & Culture, Writers Workshop, Technology Integration, and so much more!
My students will benefit from the new ideas I will bring back to my classroom.
More than half of students from low‑income households
