Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
We are a Title I, inner-city elementary school in California. We serve a low-income community with 99% of our student body receiving free or reduced lunches. The majority of our students are second language learners who have made amazing academic gains over the past ten years.
My students live in the most densely populated area of our city.
This neighborhood is no stranger to violence, gangs, and shootings. As a result, parents are too fearful to let their children go outside and play. Our students sit inside and play video games instead.
Budgets are tight everywhere, and sports equipment is not a priority in schools. At recess and lunch, when students are supposed to be running and playing, they stand around instead. They have not moved, broken a sweat, or increased their heart rate at all, not at home, and not in school. It is not shocking that a large percentage of our students are moderately to severely overweight.

My Project
Do you remember what it was like sitting in a desk all day long waiting for recess? As the bell rang, you would grab your jump rope, basketball, or football and burst out the door to play with your friends. Our students are as excited about recess as we were, but they don't have the equipment to play with.
My students need a variety of sports equipment, including training jump ropes, Under Armour soccer balls and mini basketballs, and Wilson footballs.
This equipment will keep our students moving. We can get our heart rates up.
It is no longer enough for teachers to stick to academics. We are now responsible for teaching how to be healthy. Our students need strong minds AND strong bodies. With your support we can achieve that goal.
