This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach kindergarten in a culturally diverse, high-needs school. About half of my students attended preschool prior to coming to kindergarten. For the other half, kindergarten is their first school experience. For most children, sitting still and learning for long periods of time is a real challenge. A five- or six-year-old learns best when learning takes place in 10-15 minute lessons. Children this age also have a great need to move, whether it is dancing to music, playing active games or running, jumping, and swinging at recess. In CA, we are required to provide roughly 10 minutes of physical education each day. The fact is, this activity is crucial for many students who don't get enough exercise outside of school. However, it is challenging to provide meaningful, engaging physical education for my students when we have very little PE equipment. We have a few jump ropes and some old hula hoops and that is it. To get my kindergarten kids moving, I have requested some fun physical education supplies. The balls will help students increase their large motor skills and work on hand-eye coordination. The relay games will encourage team work, while getting my students to move their bodies. The hopscotch rugs will be perfect for indoor PE, when it is bad weather and we can't go outside. Finally, I have requested a book of physical education games. This book is full of wonderful games and activities that get kids moving. With childhood obesity on the rise, I know that many of my students will benefit from better physical education. You can help get my students moving! Your support will mean that my students will get meaningful physical education each day in ways that are fun and engaging for them! In addition, these materials will be shared with three other kindergarten classes, meaning that close to 80 students will benefit from your support! Thank you!
