Get Lost In a Book...Reading For the Fun of It

My project needs one child-sized vinyl sofa.

I teach first grade at a suburban school in Los Angeles. I have mixed ability children in my classroom, ranging from gifted to students with identified learning disabilities and other special needs. The reading area I will create with this sofa will benefit all my students. Reading is enjoyable and entertaining as well as develops your imagination. I want my first grade students to become life long readers and lovers of books. I want them to learn to read for the fun of it. I want to create an environment in my classroom that promotes a love of books and reading that will last a lifetime. I want to create a warm, relaxing spot where my students can sit and read alone or in pairs. In order to create this special place where all students can feel that they are successful readers, I would like a child-sized sofa. They will use this area many times throughout the day. This area will be where I read aloud to the students as well as the spot where they do BEAR (Be Excited About Reading) each day. As an adult, my favorite way to relax is to read for pleasure. Who hasn't closed their eyes while listening to a story being read aloud and imagined that they were a part of what was happening. Who hasn't felt Wilbur's pain when Charlotte died, or felt Dorothy's happiness when she returns to Kansas, or wished that they had a big red dog like Clifford? I want my students to experience the joy I get from reading throughout their lives too.
