If you could be in my class during 4th bell, you'd hear a horrible buzzing from the speaker system connected to my computer and my feet clopping across the room, for I never sit down. But then, you'll start to start to listen harder, and you'll hear the sounds of 29 kids working meticulously on their works of literary genius that many of their friends will have no idea what blood, sweat, and tears they put into it.
My creative writing class is made up of 29 kids that many have never had the opportunity to write what they really want to write because English classes are now full of test prep and essays about topics they are bored with.
The problem: the class is brand new and has literally nothing to get started with.
My Project
Imagine a class that has no precedence. You can do whatever you want. It sounds great, right? But with a blank slate comes no books and no guidance. With Get Lit Rising! my students will have the opportunity to not only connect to relevant stories from other diverse young adults but also the chance to read classical poetry and modern rewrites of that same poetry.
Having relevant examples not only inspires creativity, but also gives students an opportunity to make connections with and see that poetry is not just love and nature.
This book also provides numerous before reading writing activities and after reading activities that give me an opportunity to get the kids writing and thinking, and then, they have opportunities to choose to write on their own.
