Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Hello, I am a public school teacher in an urban area of Illinois. Our school year has not started, but I am sure I will have a classroom of about 30-33 wonderful students! Most of the students in the area are children of Mexican immigrants or African-Americans. Almost all of the students' families live under the poverty level. Despite this, the students are eager to learn and create a successful school experience.
Our classroom, however, is lacking some basic supplies that would assist the students in learning and assist myself in recognizing areas of instruction that students need more help with mastering.
I have found that one of the best ways to practice new concepts, check understanding of concepts, and review previously taught concepts is to use white boards. With white boards, students are able to respond to questions through drawing/writing. Then, as the teacher, I am able to see students' work and assess students' thinking and understanding. Another perk to using the boards is that the students simply love them. Even if the students dislike math, multiplication problems on a white board are fun to them.
I have found that white boards really empower students. They serve as an alternative to oral answers given in front of an entire class; this is comforting to students that are too shy to share responses orally with classmates. Giving each student a white board also allows EACH student to respond to the same question in the amount of time that works best for him/her. The dreaded situation in which students are still processing the original question while another blurts out the answer becomes a rare event.
By helping fund this project, you will help ALL of the students in my classroom to become more engaged and motivated. Furthermore, you will help me to meet the needs of my students. By being able to quickly assess students' understanding, I can pick out those students that need more help and those that are ready to move on to the next concept.
This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
