This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our students are sweet, kind, loving, hardworking, inquisitive, sometimes rambunctious and perhaps a little mischievous 2nd graders. Some of our students have not yet discovered books that capture their imaginations. This could be the year that magic happens and they fall in love with books.

The school supports the whole child through a series of programs in which families can participate in dental, medical, and mental health programs.

Our population is diverse and growing. The students are predominantly English language learners; Spanish, Chinese, Arabic. Our school strongly believes in nurturing respect and a love of learning with our students, partnering with their families, and reaching out to the surrounding community. Together we work hard to maximize resources and grow our community.

My Project

As English language learners the 1st way the resources are used is to create a common dialogue among students and teachers. Having such a large quantity and selection has allowed for students and teachers to all be reading and studying the same texts in both book clubs and guided reading. From there, the texts are used to support literacy strategies such as retelling in sequential order, compare and contrast, identification of character traits/feelings, studying character's growth and development across a series and time. We have also developed comprehension worksheets to accompany the text, fostering independence and strengthening Common Core Skills.

Our students will use series books to help provide them with opportunities to discover books that not only capture their imaginations, but help them grow as readers as well.

These series books will also help spark book talks in allowing students to articulate and support their thinking about books.
