My Students

Sixth grade students are at a very exciting and unique time in their school careers. They are exiting elementary school and embarking on their middle school years. Though this can be an overwhelming time for them, my students embrace this transformation with enthusiasm and resilience.

Our sixth grade is comprised of over 60 amazing students, many of whom are English Language Learners and receive free or reduced price lunch.

My school is in the heart of San Francisco and has a very high immigrant population. My school offers the best practices in English Language Development and encourages students to celebrate their cultural diversity in a safe community. Our middle school provides a rigorous academic experience with an emphasis on collaborative learning and community.

My Project

Have you ever watched a movie and then immediately rented the sequel because you just couldn't wait to find out what happens?! Imagine how much more engaged reluctant readers could be in reading if they felt that same pull toward a story.

Book series are the solution to get reluctant readers hooked on reading!

There are so many amazing, thrilling, and fun book series for young people that even adults can enjoy. Series such as The Maze Runner and The Chronicles of Narnia are timeless stories filled with incredible characters and story lines. Having these series available in my classroom library for students to choose from will support the push to get all students reading at grade level. These series can be available to students to read individually or as part of a book club with their peers. No matter how they read them, they'll be picking another book up as soon as they finish one, which is crucial to growth in reading levels.
