This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
John Bowne students are hard working and diligent. They strive for success in everything they do. They work hard and need some activities to keep their active minds engaged.
The students at John Bowne are serious learners and take their education seriously.
JBHS is a large urban public school with almost 4000 students. Our students come from a variety of different economic backgrounds with over 60% of our students receiving free lunch. Our school is also one of the most ethnically diverse schools in Queens. Students speak a multitude of languages including English, Spanish, Hindi, Urdu, Bengali, Mandarin, Cantonese, and Arabic.
As diverse as our students are economically and culturally, they are diverse in their academics. Our school is home to the only FFA Agricultural program in the city. Our students run a farm that produces fresh produce and eggs. We also have a small animals such as chicken, miniature horses and even peacocks.
My Project
The library at our school is an active learning center. We see on average a thousand students a day. They come into the library for a variety of reasons; to study, compete homework assignments, apply for jobs and colleges, or just for a quiet place to be with their friends. This will be a new reason for them to visit. Here they will find a place where they can socialize as well as study, and learn while playing a game.
The students will be able to use these cooperative and strategy based board games not only to have some fun and think critically but learn that overcoming a challenge as a group is just as satisfying as winning on your own.
And in this age of technology our students will also experience having fun without be connected to an electronic device.
More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households
