Get Flexible!

My students need flexible seating for the counseling office. By having a wide variety of seating options, students will feel less "antsy" and will be able to focus for longer periods of time.

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

As a school counselor to an elementary school in a low income/high poverty neighborhood, I have become very familiar with the everyday struggles that our students face. While I cannot change the environment in which the students call home, I strive to provide all the resources and tools for our students at school in order to help them achieve both academically and socially.

Our students crave the love and support that is provided by our teachers and staff on a daily basis.

While many of our students come from single-parent homes with multiple siblings, positive attention is not always given. School is their "safe place." Just as we hold expectations for our students, our students hold expectations for us that go beyond the academic curriculum.

Our students are young, bright and determined. Despite the apparent achievement gaps and economic status of our families, our students are determined to grow and positively impact our world.

My Project

So many of our students struggle when it comes to staying in their seat, keeping their hands to themselves, and staying on task. Their young bodies are meant to be moving! By sitting in a hard plastic chair for up to two hours without a break, their bodies are resisting what is only natural for them. Imagine trying to do your job while sitting in one of those chairs. Let's be honest, it would not be fun.

Flexible seating is the newest trend!

Not only does it allow students to have different options when it comes to seating, most options allow the students to "wiggle" while being seated. By allowing that little movement, students will not feel as antsy and will be able to focus more on the task at hand.

My project includes a variety of fun flexible seating options for the classroom and the counseling office. These include inflatable chairs, bean bags, a large tee pee, and a large classroom rug. My hope is to meet the needs of all our students by providing them with a fun, unique way of getting comfortable.
