Get Faster And Faster With Fluency Fun

My students need "Beat The Clock! Math Practice Boards" and dry erase markers for addition and subtraction fluency practice.

FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. Burke's classroom raised $175

My Students

One of the ways that we predict future success in math is by measuring the computational fluency. The best way to get more fluent with addition and subtraction facts is to practice them. We need a new, fun way to do this.

I teach in a Title I school that serves a wide variety of students.

We have many students who are learning English for the first time. We serve 50% of our students free or reduced priced breakfast and lunch. I teach students who come from good families who only want the best for their kids. My students work hard to meet my high expectations and know that they have my support and the support of their families.

My Project

Worksheets, worksheets, worksheets. That seems to be the typical way to practice addition and subtraction facts. As I take a good hard look at this practice, it bothers me for several reasons. I am trying to be more environmentally conscious, so worksheets are not my first choice. I also want to keep my kids actively engaged in the work that I ask them to do. One way that I have found to accomplish both of these tasks is through the "Beat The Clock! Math Practice Boards" that I found. These write and wipe boards will allow my students to practice their addition and subtraction facts while they time themselves. The boards come with built-in timers that the kids operate themselves. They set goals for themselves and work to beat their goal time. I think that these practice boards and timers would be great incentive to get the kids to practice their math facts independently while I am teaching my small groups.

If we are going to use math fluency as a predictor of future math success, we have to give them time to practice the very math facts that we'll test them on.

I feel very strongly about finding a fun and engaging way to entice kids to practice their math facts. Setting and beating your own goal is a great way to inspire future mathematicians.
