More and more research is proving that exercise before school helps improve learning. Students often come to school feeling rushed, anxious, or disregulated in some way. A short burst of exercise helps calm students and get their bodies ready for learning.
We are a large K-5 school in a high-poverty city.
Most of our students receive free breakfast and lunch. A majority of our students come from bilingual homes. Our test scores are not where we would like them to be for many reasons. Our staff is trying new ways to increase the learning of our students. When we start our day with yoga or any exercise, the students are more relaxed and therefore more ready to learn.
My Project
Currently, we do yoga in our classroom 2 days a week. The students love it. I always join them on a rug near my desk, when I realized these poor children are doing yoga on a cold, hard, tile floor and no one was complaining! I'm not sure they are even getting the full relaxation benefits of yoga on that terrible surface. With soft mats, they would be even more motivated to exercise and would really reap the benefits.
Learning the importance of exercise at a young age is very important.
It will hopefully become part of their lives forever. With the increase in childhood obesity, it is important for children to understand the need for being active and taking care of their bodies. I feel this lesson and a love of yoga and physical movement will stay with them forever.
