Get Dirty For Science

My students need a worm composting bin and a sand/water table to learn about soils, ecology, and erosion.

My Students

Do you remember the joy of getting dirty, playing with dirt, rocks, sticks and worms? Our students need some materials to learn about how food is composted and worms help to turn it into soil. They will also learn about erosion with the sand and water table!

Our school houses students from grades K-5 in a suburban area in the Midwest prairie.

Our school was built in the 1950's and we have a nice shady courtyard where we can do experiments with soil with all of the children in our school. The children are inquisitive, and love to learn about their environment. The community is supportive of ecology and protecting our environment. We will use these materials for all grade levels for their different science standards. The worm composting bin will be a great addition to our new school garden.

My Project

We would like a sand and water table to use as a soil erosion demonstration area, as well as for use as a potting table. We have just started a school vegetable garden, and this table will become very useful. We will also be able to use the table to test soil Ph, and do other messy and dirty science experiments. The outdoor quality table will make it possible to do our experiments outdoors in our courtyard. We are also asking for a worm composting bin. This will allow the older students in our school to learn how worms turn garbage into soil. The younger students will then be able to use the soil and the worms in our new school vegetable garden. As the science coordinator for the school, I am very excited to be able to offer hands-on opportunities to our students. There is no substitute for getting your hands a little dirty and learning some wonderful things about ecology!

This project will not only benefit my kindergarten students, but also their 3rd grade buddies, the school's garden, and all of the students in the school.

Our students will learn how to test and protect the soil, the importance of plants for erosion, and the benefits of worms to the soil and our school garden.
