"Once you learn to read, you will be forever free."
-Frederick Douglas
Students come to my classroom owning a variety of experiences with books. One thing that I hope they have in common by the time that the leave is a love for books and the adventures they can take us on.
My students come from diverse backgrounds.
Many of my students speak a language other than English at home. They come from hard-working families. Over half of the population at our school receives free or reduced lunch. One thing that unites us all is our commitment to education and our community as a whole. We work together to complete many tasks and we do so in a positive manner.
My Project
I am requesting a Comfy Corner Listening Center, two toddler chairs, a set of Fairy Tales read-alongs and I Can Read read-alongs.
With these resources, the students will be able to listen and follow along to books read to them on CD's. This experience proves to help their language development, fluency and overall reading enjoyment. The listening center will be used as a station that students can relax and enjoy books with their peers. Together, they will not only get to listen to books but they will have rich conversations and complete corresponding tasks.
The listening center I am hoping to provide for my students will give them the opportunity to engage with books in a collaborative, engaging way.
The furniture is comfortable and organized so students can work independently. Our current situation often involves students spending many of their minutes untangling the headphone wires or gathering around a single book. The opportunity to listen to books will also promote reading growth and most importantly, an overall love for reading!
