Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Education these days at schools of poverty is very different than the education many of us received. Social Studies, Science, and Art (many of the subjects that inspire students to learn) have been eliminated and replaced with scripted Reading, Math, and tests tests tests.

I have 26 students who yearn to learn more about the world we live in.

Our only free time is 15 minutes in the morning for Entry Task. It would be amazing to receive a subscription to "Time for Kids." It would be so wonderful to open their eyes to current events and the world around them. It would also give them INSPIRATION to read, something really lacking at our school and many schools of poverty where students score low on reading assessments and put into boring remedial reading classes and taught only phonics.

My Project

In the morning I would have the magazine on their desks before they came in. I can already imagine their excitement and questions that would arise as they read the magazine and share excitedly with their neighbors. This time of day would be a great respite from the scripted curriculum I'm forced to teach them for the rest of the day. I'm not sure if I filled out the request correctly...I have 26 students and would like a year long subscription to "Time for Kids".

This would bring back valid learning where the students' eyes are opened to the world around them and they are inspired to learn more and ask questions.

I think that these skills are critical for students to be productive members of society one day, as well as critical thinkers and life long learners.
