My students need nutrient agar to grow bacteria cultures.
FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Collins's classroom raised $171
This project is fully funded
I teach biology to sophomores in an urban high school. Everyday we are trying to prepare our students for college. With tight budgets, money for lab activities and fun projects is not always available.
My students love to do laboratory activities. They learn best by doing, as opposed to reading and taking notes. They especially enjoy the labs in which they get to apply what we have learned in the lesson with real-life situations. Several of these labs would give my students the opportunity to see what labs are like in college. One topic we discuss is bacteria and growth of organisms. I would like to grow bacteria cultures in agar in our classroom to discover the "germiest" place in school.
This project will allow my students the opportunity to grow their own bacteria cultures using items from around the school. This is relevant to life as many people do not realize just how "germy" different objects are. Examples would include door knobs, pens, desks, lockers, etc. We could also do other labs such as looking at the effect of different disinfectants on bacteria growth including Lysol, hand sanitizer, and hand soap.
This project will also help to prepare my students for biology lab in college where several different cultures are grown and examined. This will give them the experience in high school before having to do it in college.
By donating to this project, you will be bringing a real world application of biology into my classroom, as well as preparing them for labs they will do in college. Thank you for your support of science education!
