My Students

My special education students come to school every day with smiles on their faces and ready to learn. They are eager to please and to work hard. But from the moment the bell rings, they struggle. Academics do not come easy for my students. Many struggle in all areas: reading, writing, and math. They fall farther and farther behind their peers and their confidence dwindles. Although there are many possible reasons for this, one cause is clear.

The challenge is poverty.

My special needs students attend an elementary school that has the most students in poverty as well as the most English Language Learners district-wide. We are a Title I school where greater than 80% of our students receive free lunch. Our school has some of the greatest teachers in the district, but our test scores show that our students are still below district and state averages. Furthermore, our school has a low graduation rate, and studies show that the risk of dropping out of high school starts in elementary. As teachers, we want the very best for our students, but we are faced with heavy challenges.

My Project

My elementary, special education students will be participating in in-person learning this school year. This means that my students will be at school, learning in the classroom for the majority of the school day. Our classroom will need some additional resources so that the children and teacher can be safe and protected from COVID-19. For example, the sneeze guard will be used as a barrier so that I can work one-on-one with my students.

It is very important that the I am able to work directly with students, as many of my students need specialized instruction and interventions.

In addition, all students will be required to wear masks, but I anticipate that students may lose their masks, drop them, get them dirty, etc., so it will be important to have back up masks ready for students. We need to keep our classroom as clean as possible. Any shared equipment and surfaces will need to be disinfected after each use. I worry that we will quickly run out of cleaning supplies. Myself and my students also need to keep distance from others as much as possible, and we cannot use certain shared equipment any longer. We no longer have access to our shared microwave, so we will need our own microwave to heat up lunches. Lastly, kids will need lots of hand sanitizer to help keep the germs at bay.
