German Immersion Second Grade Math STEM DLI Technology Tools

My students need ten frames and clocks to conceptualize math. Individual dry erase crayons and sensory pencil toppers will help students with special needs.

My Students

Our students choose their own classroom rules and regulate their learning as they come in the classroom. We are the German Immersion side of a DLI classroom so they never speak English in class. We use songs and patterns from Whole Brain learning.

Our students come from varied socioeconomic levels and learning abilities.

Our school teaches to each student and allows students to learn in higher grade levels as well as providing varied teaching for students that are below grade level. We have two half day classes on the German side. Our school is a charter school and I work with an English speaking teacher and my students only speak German. Many students have learning disabilities and we adapt instruction to their needs. Some students are learning at or above a third grade level and are driven to succeed. Others are reading a bit below grade level and we have additional help coming to help them get as much one on one help as possible. We are driven to help teachers and students be life long learners. When students come in the class they know to go write about their day and speak only German. They selected their own classroom rules and consequences and teach each other when they understand.

My Project

I have specific children that would really benefit from sensory tools like pencil toppers that they could use during class time. We also have activities where a student shares what they did during the day in German and everyone else would have a small hour and display the times that they hear during the story. students would use STEM tools to learn basic addition and subtraction skills between 1 and 120 in German. Dice can be used for games such as rolling for a number to help establish place value awareness. Playing cards would also provide numbers which let children feel like they are playing a game when they are adding multiple numbers together. Ten frame boards would help students that don't understand place value without an actual object that shows grouping.

We are a new program and this is our first grade of German immersion in the Utah school system.

Our classroom is still being set up. These tools will help us provide varied instruction and build a classroom base for students. These tools will help autistic and children with ADHD as well as students with other needs. Giving a student that started below grade level the tools to understand STEM skills here in second grade can provide a solid foundation for a successful school career.
