My Students
I teach first grade at an elementary school in Northeast Philadelphia. My students enter the classroom each day excited to learn how to read, write, speak and listen. They each have a heart of gold paired with motivation and determination to be the best that they can be.
Our school population is more than 60% economically disadvantaged and 10% English language learners.
Our students come from all over the world including China, Afghanistan, Iraq, Nigeria, Uzbekistan, Bangladesh and of course, Philadelphia. Our school provides a nurturing environment for students, staff, and families to enrich them academically and grow as positive social contributors in our world. Our parents are extremely supportive and involved in their child's education. Our parents and students aspire to succeed and achieve their goal of living the American Dream. Due to the financial crisis, all of our educational supplies, resources, and materials are either limited or non-existent. Many teachers spend much of their own paychecks each year to be sure that they, along with their students, have everything that they need to succeed!
My Project
Did you know that rugs are at least 4000 times dirtier than a toilet bowl? There are at least 200,000 germs and bacteria in addition to dust mites, and allergens per square inch thriving in carpets and rugs. Carpets are germ breeding farms. This is why WE NEED YOUR HELP!
I would love to be able to shampoo our classroom carpet several times a year in order to keep the germs and sicknesses at bay!
Classroom cleanliness is almost as important to us as the learning that takes place. Our carpet is a safe haven where we meet daily to communicate, collaborate and expand our knowledge! Having a carpet cleaner would really help to easily maintain this area for years to come.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
