This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My school has students from Pre-K through sixth grade. Approximately 70% of our students qualify for free and reduced-priced lunch. We also have a high English Language Learner population. A substantial number of students at my school do not have access to basic hygiene products, which are necessities to keep young children healthy and well. Many students in my class have accommodations to help meet their diverse medical and learning needs.

I would like to keep my class healthy and comfortable through the winter, and during the upcoming flu season.

My students are typical 5th graders; active, engaged, and messy at times.

Our classroom is usually a hub for various activities during the day, and after school. I want to provide a warm and engaging classroom environment where students can feel at home and uncomfortable at all times.

My students are hard working 10 year olds that deserve the opportunity to learn in a germ free environment. They are more productive when they aren't fighting off illnesses, or missing numerous days from school, being out sick.

My Project

I would like to create a warm, healthy, and germ-free environment in my classroom. Some very basic items can make this possible. Our students are in school for less than 175 days in the year. Illnesses like the common cold, strep, and the dreaded flu are rampant at my school. Over the last few years, the number of students per classroom with perfect attendance have been reduced to one or two.

Students can't learn if they are unwell and uncomfortable, or absent from school.

I was recently informed that wiping down desks with Clorox wipes twice a day, could reduce student absences by 50%. Students can't learn if they aren't in class, and many illnesses that result in my students being absent, can be avoided with a few disinfectant or hygiene products.

I'm requesting for Clorox wipes to wipe down desks, twice a day. I always have a large bottle of hand sanitizer by the door. Students are encouraged to use sanitizer every time they leave the classroom for lunch or recess, as well as when they come in from recess. Students also use sanitizer each time they use a Kleenex to blow their nose, to prevent any infection from spreading.

Our dry air in New Mexico, makes for a very uncomfortable winter. I always keep a bottle of lotion on the counter for my students to use, as needed. Chapped lips are another problem due to our dry weather. Q-tips and a jar of vaseline is a hygienic way for students to take care of these basic needs, while in the classroom.

Providing students with these basic hygiene products during the school day makes them feel comfortable and welcome, and helps them stay healthy and well.
