Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Teaching math through traditional "skill and drill" works for some students, but not most. "Empowering Students Through Art" provides opportunities for all students to gain a deep understanding of mathematical concepts.

My students are loud and proud.

Seventy-five percent of them are of Hispanic descent and are either from the Dominican Republic or Puerto Rico. The other twenty-five percent are either African American or from other Caribbean islands. Poverty and socioeconomic status are the biggest obstacles facing my students. However, many are willing to put in the effort needed to overcome some of the hurdles they face, while some are relentless in their pursuit of education.

My Project

My students will make connections to geometry by experiencing the ancient art of folding paper, origami. They will use the requested origami paper and origami books as they analyze and create geometric solids known as polyhedrons and have a firm understanding of the mathematics behind their creations. Through hands-on creations even the less articulate math students can blossom and flourish.

The ancient art of origami provides many opportunities for learning.

Students will create geometric solids and understand the math behind those shapes, but they will also be able to unleash their artistic abilities by creating other interesting designs. Best of all, origami teaches patience, tolerance, and perseverance...something we could all use a little more of.
