Geometric Innovation through Planning and Design

My students need these WEDGIT building pieces and WEDGIT design cards to help with planning, creating, and testing stuctures they create.

My Students

Our classroom is a multi-age classroom of higher-level Kindergarten and 1st Grade students.

Our school receives 100% free or reduced lunch. The students in this classroom are working above and beyond grade level and need to be challenged outside of just their acceleration in reading and math.

My Project

We plan to use these materials during innovative geometry math centers. The students will use the WEDGIT pieces and design cards, as well as the SUPERMAG building rods to plan for a geometric structure, create the structure, and improve the structure, if necessary. The focus will be to work as a team to invent a structure that is stable and follows a design plan.

Too often, young children are told what to do, without being given an opportunity to make their own decisions.

In order for students to be successful in life (both academically and personally), they need to have chances to think before creating, to have open-ended opportunities to challenge themselves with design, and to revise plans when the original plans no longer prove to be effective. Students need to be given the opportunity to make choices WITH intention, with a specific goal in mind.
