This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are 9th graders and they have done some tremendous work developing their growth mindset and their revision and critique process in our project based classroom.
We have an enrollment of 41% free or reduced price lunch and our special population is significantly higher than the average in our area.
My students work collaboratively with other students and do work on projects that are integrated between disciplines and they are in equitably composed math classes where projects help level the field for everyone to beautiful work!
My Project
In this project, the students will apply their learning in geometry to create beautiful succulent planters. Some of the supplies on this list like calculators and compasses will be used in our exploratory learning about constructions and congruence in Geometry. Items like the frame and mounting materials are to share the students written group work widely with visitors on the wall of our building. And most everything else is for the actual constructing and laser cutting the succulent planters. These planters will not only make our work space more pleasant, but they will help students gain a tangible value for learning geometry (to creating beautiful work that is complex and professional). The end placement of these planters will likely be our shared common work space, but the students could similarly choose to gift the planters to a family member or other person in need. The students may further decide to turn this into a student run business where they sell at farmers markets and other travelling art shows!
